Activities with apples

How many kinds of apples?
There are 2,500 varieties of apples grown throughout the United States. The top ten are: Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, Granny Smith, McIntosh, York Imperial, Rome Beauty, Johnathan, Stayman, Newtown Pippin, and Winesap. Do any of these grow in your area? Which have you eaten? Be adventurous and try a few that are new to you.

Ask each student to bring an apple from home. Create a graph based on the varieties or the colors of apples brought in.

Apple art
Use apples in an art project. Cut apples in half from the stem downward. Dip the cut side in paint to make apple prints.

Apples as food
Make applesauce from the apples students have brought in. Talk about the students' favorite foods made from apples. Make a list of these foods and then graph them as follows:

My favorite Way to Eat Apples
   Raw
  Apple pie
  Applesauce
  Carmel apples

Ask questions such as:
What was the most popular choice?
How many of one choice was there as opposed to another?
What was the total of two of the choices?

Apples and language arts
Brainstorm and list apple adjectives. For example: juicy, crunchy, sweet, red, green, yummy.
