CLASSNOTES: ACTIVITIES: Soil

Thoughts of Spring

Children and plants just naturally go together, and it's a wise teacher who takes advantage of this natural bond.

With Spring just around the corner, thoughts turn to remembrances of other classrooms years ago, and lima bean seeds lovingly planted in Dixie cups and placed with care on a sunny windowsill. The name of your elementary science book may elude you, and you may not remember the content of a single text, but those bean seeds have probably remained a wonderful memory through all of the years.

New generations of young people now fill the schoolrooms and hallways, but they, too, can experience the excitement of planting seeds and observing the first signs of germination.

Growing plants in the classroom requires very little space and few materials. Planting and growing projects in the classroom can be used to reinforce a variety of math and science concepts.
